The Academy of Sciences of Yakutia has begun to develop a program of comprehensive research of the Yakut Arctic, including the study of the productive forces of the Arctic zone of the region. This was announced by TASS on Wednesday, Vice-President of the Academy Andrei Matveyev.

The authorities of Yakutia had previously announced their intention to create in the north-east of the region a territory of advanced development "Subsoil use and resources processing" for the development of gold, tin and silver reserves. The implementation of the project, in advance, will help attract investments in the amount of 27 billion rubles and create about 1.7 thousand jobs. The main activities of potential residents of anchor projects should be mining and enrichment of tin ore, mining of ores and sands of precious metals.

"The Academy is preparing a program of comprehensive research of the Yakut Arctic. Definitely, the program will include the study of the productive forces, issues of subsoil use and ecology in the implementation of industrial projects. The implementation of scientific research is planned to be carried out with the support of the regional government and large industrial companies," he said.

The Academy of Sciences plans to begin this work in 2019. "The interest in the Arctic is large from the point of view of economic development, development of offshore and continental deposits. The East North is the world's storehouse of minerals and resources. They need to be mastered rationally, observing the principle of minimal environmental damage and maximum economic effect," said the agency interlocutor.

Earlier it was reported that the Arctic Research Center of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), created by reprofiling the Center for Arctic Archeology and Human Paleoecology at a regional scientific organization, began work in the new status. The creation of an integrated center is associated with the need to "concentrate research resources to solve the problems of northerners, primarily from the point of view of the socio-economic development of the territory, the study of environmental problems remains important," the center's management reported.

The Academy of Sciences of Yakutia was established in 1993 as the highest scientific institution for the unification of the scientific potential of the republic, the formation of a regional science policy.
